I remember when I first got a taste of Final Fantasy X, on the demo disc that came with Final Fantasy VI for the original PlayStation: the opening cutscene blew me away! The screaming electric guitar, growling heavy metal vocals, the sheer spectacle of the underwater blitzball arena in Zanarkand, seeing Tidus and the other players zoom around in the water, tackling and hi-fiving each other. It made me want to play the real thing as soon as possible, and I couldn’t wait to progress past the prologue scene in the full game and learn how blizball really worked.

The extent to which blitzball is hyped up can’t be overstated. It’s the protagonist’s profession, his defining character trait: on arrival in Spira, Tidus is treated like an amnesiac itinerant blitzball player, similar to the various freelancers you can later recruit to your team. “He’ll find someone who knows him in Luca”, Wakka says: the Blitzball capital of Spira. He hangs around with a team of blitzballers for the first act of the story, develops a rivalry with the snotty Luca Goers, celebrates the arrival of other teams on arrival in Luca. Everyone talks about blitzball! It gives Spira hope, it galvanises the Crusaders to drive Sin away from the stadium, it’s got special exceptions from Yevon to use machina… Final Fantasy X is screaming, “let’s play blitzball!” It wants you to be excited, wants you to love it.

And yet, at the same time, Final Fantasy X goes out of its way to make you hate it.

Your Introduction to Defeat

When Wakka announces the match-ups for the tournament - the Besaid Aurochs will play the Al Bhed Psyches, and if they win, they get to the final as a seed team - I’m sure many players thought, “ah, that will be the warm-up game to teach us the rules before we play the big storyline game against our rivals the Goers”. Then it pulls an unexpected bait-and-switch: the Psyches decide to kidnap Yuna in a half-baked plot to get the Aurochs to throw the match, and Tidus is forced to skip it to go rescue her. With this distraction resolved, the game finally lets you out into the blitzball sphere to play an actual game. To say that it drops you into the deep end is completely accurate in more ways than one…

You see, the Besaid Aurochs are terrible. Their starting stats are amongst the worst in the whole game. And not only are they playing the Luca Goers, who have stats that completely eclipse theirs even at level 1, you (the player) are going in with no practice, no training, not even an active tutorial to get you used to how blitzball works. You’re encouraged to read the in-game manual, which has some demonstrations of the various mechanics: passing, shooting, tackling, blocking. But if you’re not playing attention, you might miss that your players are set to automatic movement by default, which is the first of many ways in which FFX crushes your dreams of blitzball glory.

If you’re unlucky, the Goers will claim the ball on blitz off, and it’ll be in the hands of their forward, Graav. Although their team captain is Bickson, with the red hair and bad attitude, Graav is their star player: his stats far exceed everyone else on the field, he’s solid on attack and defence, and because he starts at level 3, he has a tech equipped that lets him boost his tackle ability at will. If he gets the ball, you either have to throw the whole team at him and pray for a miracle, or watch him effortlessly break past your defenders and score at point blank range. Although Tidus has the opportunity to use his father’s legendary Jecht Shot in the second half, he’s got to level up first before he can equip it, and that means you need to pass him the ball a lot and have him take regular shots at goal that will almost certainly be blocked.

Finally, even if you do manage to get Tidus set up to score in the second half, he’s only got two and a half minutes to do it before a story event mid-match substitutes him for Wakka. He’s a decent player, but still has to get the ball past the Goers, who will also have leveled up at halftime and become even stronger. Remember, none of this will be immediately obvious to a new player: it’s the kind of thing that you pick up if you take the time to reset over and over until you get it right. The more likely scenario is that you just lose the match.

And that’s your first experience of blitzball. Being stomped into the ground by a team that’s deliberately designed to beat you. Why?

Fated to Lose

Final Fantasy X is critically acclaimed. It’s one of the best RPGs of all time, but internally it’s at war with itself: it wants to show off the graphics of the then-new PlayStation 2, it wants to immerse you in fully voice acted cutscenes and a deep, cinematic story. The problem is that it often does this at the expense of good game design, and blitzball is a prime example. The story dictates that you should lose: you’re the terminally unlucky Besaid Aurochs, 20 years with no wins (not just no tournament wins, they’ve never won a single game). And as I detailed above, it will do its best to make you lose, one way or another.

Part of the problem is that the blitzball sequence in Luca comes in the midst of a very long scripted story chapter without very much regular fighting, which may provide another explanation for the Al Bhed interlude. What if the game had let the player face the Psyches at Blitzball too, just minus Tidus - giving his presence in the Goers game more impact. On the other hand, a practice game might raise the Aurochs’ levels, which would put them in danger of outpacing the Goers (it doesn’t take much for the Aurochs to develop halfway decent stats, they only start awful). You, the player, would inevitably pick up some skills too: learning when to break, when to pass and how not to panic when Graav blows through your whole defence like it’s made of paper. If the game had let you have this practice round and then go on to beat the Goers as well, it would have made a mockery of the Aurochs’ terrible reputation.

See what I mean? The story needs things to happen a certain way, even if it means sacrificing the player’s dreams of blitzball stardom. The real reason why the player doesn’t get to play the Psyches match is that, again, the story dictates it. The Aurochs have to beat the Psyches to make it through to the final against the Goers; if the player was left in control, they might lose instead. By hyping up bliztball so much, then forcing you to play the big match against a superior team before you’ve even learned how blitzball works, FFX kills players’ desire to engage with the sport any further.

Blitzball no longer matters, until it does

Not that blitzball really matters past the events in Luca, that is. Upon leaving the city, the player can initiate blitzball matches from any save point: it’s here that they can begin to build their team up, either by having the Aurochs play in tournaments and improving their stats and techniques, or by recruiting the wandering freelancers around Spira. But blitzball from this point on takes place in a menu-driven vacuum: it becomes a sideshow with no relevance to the plot, which has gone on to more pressing concerns and barely even mentions the sport that it spent the last ten hours devoting large parts of the narrative to.

What this does is signal to the player that they shouldn’t even bother. The rewards it hands out for winning leagues tournaments can include new overdrives for Wakka, although they’re not guaranteed to appear, and playing ten matches to get them to refresh (with such amazing substitute rewards as… healing items and special Sphere Grid spheres that you can get elsewhere much easier) isn’t hugely appetizing. It becomes a little more pressing late in the game when you realize that the item you need to power up Wakka’s ultimate weapon is also a blitzball tournament prize… but even so, it’s a diversion from the main storyline without any character moments.

What happened to that rivalry between Tidus and Bickson of the Luca Goers? Did the Al Bhed Psyches just go back to playing blitzball after being beaten up by Yuna and Lulu? Who even are the other blitzball teams of Spira? Injecting a bit more drama around the blitzball matches would have given players much more of an incentive to dive back into the game. Imagine cutscenes that only trigger when certain players face off against each other! It would turn player recruitment into an opportunity to get to know more about the people of Spira too. What do the Guado players think about certain plot developments later on? If you recruit former Luca Goers players, do they hold a grudge? This kind of storytelling, and the expansion of Spira as a living, breathing place rather than a series of temples and highways, would be better explored in Final Fantasy X-2. The sequel radically changed how players interact with blitzball, turning it into more of a management sim, which provided a different - yet still optional - experience.

Let’s make the Goers goners

I know this isn’t a universal opinion. I know there are people who took their crushing defeat at the hands of the Goers as a challenge, and ended up wanting to play blitzball even more once the events in Luca were over. I myself have played Final Fantasy X more times than I’d care to count, and in most of them I ended up playing a lot of blizball just to make sure Wakka wasn’t stuck with his basic Element Reels overdrive for most of the game. And every time I play the game, I make a point of defeating the Luca Goers: passing the ball around aimlessly, scoring a Jecht Shot and taking full advantage of the CPU’s blind spots to prevent the Goers from ever claiming the ball. But I can only do this because I know how to play blizball already. I wish that Square had given new players a better first experience of the sport that seemed to be such an important part of the game’s world and narrative, rather than sacrificing their enthusiasm on the altar of a plot point - the Aurochs’ losing streak - that doesn’t really make any difference after the fact.

And I think that Square missed an opportunity to make blizball into something truly special by making it irrelevant to the later game, aside from those specific power-ups. Maybe the story had grown beyond a simple sporting competition, but that shouldn’t have meant sidelining it entirely. I even think that it could have been expanded into its own spin-off game, combining the best parts of the experience from both FFX and FFX-2 into one package. Blitzball was one of the highlights of Final Fantasy X, and it deserved better.
